An educational consultancy providing a wide range of academic and welfare services for students and their families.

Welcome to AT Education Consulting

My name is Andy Thompson, and I am the founder of AT Education Consulting.

I offer independent advice and guidance as students face the big moments of transition – public examination in final years’ schooling (at (I)GCSEs and A levels and also the major examinations within the International Baccalaureate), moving on to university to an undergraduate degree and also for students aspiring to postgraduate studies.

I believe such moments of transition are exciting but are also attended by worries that dominate thinking for families as students face the big challenges of public examination and choice of progress to university and, eventually, a career. Each transition – into sixth form study, into degree level study, out to a career – is a long process that involves much thinking and planning. I can help you, as I have helped hundreds of students and their families, in a variety of ways at every stage.

You will find detail of the services I offer on the following pages. If the support you require is not immediately visible, please feel free to contact me with any questions you have or any challenge you face to see if I can help. In a long career in education there is not much I haven’t encountered, but I retain a freshness and I hope, when you meet me, a warmth that inspires you to approach whatever challenge you face with renewed energy, feeling more certain of your success. No matter my experience, every time I begin with a new student and a new family I start all over again, listening to you to gain an understanding of where you are in your journey and where you want to go next. I will help you get there.

You can read a little more about my background here.

From independent educational support… to independent living for students

Findley Properties – Luxury Lettings in Oxford

While I look after students across the UK and internationally my Oxford base means that there is a constant flow of students I support arriving to experience all this wonderful city has to offer academically, culturally, and in day-to-day life.

Students who come to Oxford to prepare for life at university might choose to live in their sixth form college’s accommodation or find their own accommodation, and there is no finer choice than the service provided by Sharon Findley: www.findleyproperties.co.uk

Sharon Findley

I have worked with Sharon for over twenty years and she provides a first class service for the students who choose her accommodation, liaising with the colleges where her tenants study and providing support and advice for parents.

I thoroughly recommend Sharon and, as you explore her website, you will see the inspirational living spaces she has to offer and read the glowing recommendations she receives.

Reading Around: By The Numbers

Whoever knew accounting could be so exciting?

Jessica Otis’s close scholarship has produced an absolutely absorbing read, documenting the origins of maths for the many, and adding another dimension to the many wonderful accounts of the debt our world owes to the early modern period. I’d say this is a must read for any young mathematician looking outwards towards society at large.

Abingdon Music Festival

It’s a great pleasure to recommend an annual highlight of the Oxford music scene. The festival has now moved to the autumn and represents a great showcase of Oxford musical talent, students young and old, in one of the county’s loveliest towns with Abingdon School warm hosts. Bath Tutorial College

As a Director of Bath Tutorial College which has provided revision courses face to face and online over the last seven years – and also offers support to private candidates who do not have a UCAS centre – this summer I attended a UCAS session on changes to the university application system. While students have expressed concern about changes to the construction of the key part of their application, how they write their personal statement, UCAS have confirmed they will not be instituting changes until the 2026 application round and will be providing up-to-the-minute information and reassurance as the changes progress.

What has now changed – and a very positive step this is for students – is that the UCAS site now provides access to entry grades data – view site. This means that when a student looks at a course at a desired university they can see what grades students who were accepted for that course in previous years actually achieved. For years, there has been something of a dance with universities declaring required grades and students seeking the best possible predictions from their teachers. The new system leaves everybody with a clearer sense of where they stand and how best to proceed with their application.

Silk Roads Summer Experience

I recommend this wonderful opportunity for students from the UK and overseas to gain insight into China and its culture – and taking first steps to learn a new language. Attending the Silk Roads Summer Experience is to expand your academic horizons while having summer fun through the great activities on offer every day. The course directors understand the UK and China thoroughly – an expert team with long experience of studying and teaching in the UK at senior school and university level, they are also great ambassadors for their native China.
