Through University and Beyond

I continue to gain most satisfaction in my work with young people when another student makes the transition from school age study to university, the launch-pad into an independent life and the beginning of a career out in the wider world.

In theory, when university life begins, young people begin a life of independence. Contemporary university life, however, can be very demanding and modern universities are not always able to provide the close academic support and mentorship that was very much the hallmark of university life in the past. Contact with academic staff, who can help young people negotiate the journey through university, is limited and, where it does occur, often involves the presence of a larger number of students with a tutor. It can thus be harder for students in modern universities to gain close individual support.

Mentorship

My university mentorship service is designed to build on the experience of the mentorship service I offer through sixth form and support with undergraduate degree application. I, along with several associates, help students settle down into their first year of studies. The aim is to reduce reliance on external support through the years of undergraduate study as a student builds confidence in their abilities and develops their study skills to the highest level.

Applying for postgraduate study

My involvement with undergraduates, having diminished in the middle year (or years) of study can increase again where students require support with applications for postgraduate study at the beginning of their final year of undergraduate study. I’m also always happy to assist with general career planning, applications for traineeships, internships, and other placements.
